ChatGPT’s New Agent Mode: Digital Intern or Job Threat?

By July 28, 2025No Comments

In July 2025, OpenAI released a significant update to ChatGPT called Agent mode. The feature combines capabilities from several existing tools and lets the model control a computer on your behalf. According to the Australian Financial Review, the product pulls together and improves three of OpenAI’s existing tools to create a single interface where the AI can carry out multi-step tasks. This means ChatGPT can now browse websites, fill out forms, compile information and even build simple presentations while you watch.

Early testers describe the experience as having a “digital intern.” One reviewer on the Hotel eMarketer blog noted that 2025 is shaping up to be the year of the AI agent and that ChatGPT’s Agent Mode wants to do the clicking for us. Right now the tool is more curious than threatening: it can stumble, forget passwords and ask clarifying questions, but the potential is obvious. Over time it could become the colleague who preps your slides, books your flights and never asks for a raise.

Should we be afraid of job loss?

Whenever a new automation tool emerges, fears about job displacement follow. Agent mode certainly automates tasks that might otherwise require manual labour—data entry, basic research or making simple bookings could be offloaded to an AI. However, the current state of the technology is far from replacing skilled workers. Reviews describe the agent as an intern who needs detailed instructions and supervision, and the Australian Financial Review points out that it’s a subscription feature aimed at helping people handle complex tasks more efficiently—not a robot employee out to steal your career.

Rather than eliminating roles, agentic AI is likely to change them. As routine tasks become automated, there will be more demand for professionals who can design, supervise and refine AI-driven workflows. Soft skills such as creativity, strategic thinking and empathy remain uniquely human and will become even more valuable. Businesses that embrace tools like ChatGPT Agent may see productivity gains, while workers can focus on higher-value activities.

Making the most of Agent Mode

If you decide to experiment with ChatGPT’s Agent Mode, treat it like a junior assistant. Be specific with your instructions, break big projects into manageable steps, ask for progress updates and keep sensitive data out of your prompts. The agent is impressive, but it’s still learning. By leveraging AI as a partner rather than viewing it as a competitor, you can stay ahead of automation and use new tools to enhance your work instead of fearing them.
